Cutting for a Cure’s 2016 48-Hour Health Fair and Haircutting Marathon was truly an Amazingly Successful Community Outreach Effort.  The Marathon was Produced by Marsha R. Bonner – Founder, HUGS Movement Campaign and Dennis Mitchell – Founder, Cutting for a Cure and Owner of Denny Moe’s Superstar Barbershop.  The event brought Healthcare Providers, Celebrity Barbers, Performing Artists and the Community TOGETHER.  This year’s “Choose Life Award” recipients were Dr. Ojajide Williams for his dedication and commitment to health as Chief of Staff/Medical Officer of the Department of Neurology at Columbia University and as Founder of Hip Hop Public Health; and to Ms. Doreen Davis our Unsung Hero.

In an effort to fundraise for this endeavor, Cutting for a Cure has launched the I H.A.T.E. Campaign standing for Health, Awareness, Treatment and Education. While ailments such as cancer, diabetes and hypertension are prevalent among minority groups, there is often a disconnect between the impact of these diseases and the people they affect. Through a series of videos and photos, the campaign shares stories of how these illnesses affect the lives of real people. The campaign has become a movement and its message has even garnered celebrity participation from Barbershop 3 stars Ice Cube, Common, Eve and Cedric the Entertainer as well as R&B crony Bobby Brown and other celebrity friends of the barbershop.

What an AMAZING Experience for me and Dennis “Denny Moe” Mitchell as we had the opportunity to be guests on “Sway in the Morning” with Sway Calloway and Kelly Kincaid.  We were featured on the show’s “First Aid with Kelly Kincaid” segment and health disparities in underserved communites and Cutting for. Cure’s 48-Hour Health Fair and Haircutting Marathon starting on Friday, July 15 and ending on Sunday, July 17, 2016 which is designed to bring Healthcare Providers to the Harlem Community.  It just gets better and better and better.  Live and Embrace a “HUGS Mindset.”  Much Love…MarshaHUGS

Marsha and “LOVE-HUGS Valentine’s Day Bags: In HONOR of the LEGACY of My Friend, Mr. Eugene Rounds who transitioned home this year. He was a Homeless Man who I saw, spoke to, bought a cup of tea and/or a Danish for from time to time for over 10 years on my way to work but NEVER KNEW HIS NAME. In previous years, Mr. Rounds was an Actor, A Singer, an avid Patron of the Theater and a World Traveler. So, I decided to CELEBRATE His Life with “LOVE-HUGS VALENTINE’S DAY BAGS” to give to individuals less fortunate than myself. I only had FIVE BAGS and I filled each with a small box of candy with the words Happy Valentine’s Day on it, a thick scarf, a wool hat, wool gloves, three pairs of socks – all wrapped in red tissue paper.

Well, I would like to introduce you to MY FIVE NEW FRIENDS. I asked for their names and also if I could take a picture of them. RESPECT!!:

1. Quedees. Met him on the #2 Train. Quedees and his wife have been homeless for over 10 years and living on the NYC Trains. He said: “I am going to give this to my wife. She needs it more than I do. I knew you were special as soon as you got on this train. You are a true servant of Allah, Ms. Marsha.”

2. Shirley. Met her on the #2 Train. Shirley had two shopping carts with all her worldly belongings. She said: “Is this for me? I been out here for so many years. Nobody ever did anything like this for me. I thank God for You, Marsha.” I just didn’t ask her to take a picture with the bag.

3. Yvonne. Met her in the tunnel at NY Penn Station. Yvonne has been homeless for over 15 years. She said: “Are you sure you don’t need these socks? These gloves are really nice. OMG, a box of candy. I can’t believe this. A Valentine’s gift for me. I just don’t believe this.”

4. Billie. Met her in NY Penn Station. She had a rolling travel cart with all of her belongings. She is a Mute, unable to speak. A bystander gave me her name. She took the bag, looked through it, bowed and nodded her head, motioned with her lips “thank you” and then just walked away.

5. Brian. Met him walking up and down NY Penn Station with no shoes and feet ravaged by life’s circumstances. His diction and speech was impeccable; his gracious manner was so touching. He said: “Yes, My name is Brian. This is very kind. Happy Valentine’s Day to You.” Brian at first only let me take a picture of his hands holding the bag but agreed to take a picture from a distance. I honored his request.

The GOD that I HONOR works through PEOPLE and I am committed to going out EVERY VALENTINE’S DAY that He Blesses Me With. I had Five Bags and I could have used 500 of them. Next Year, I am trusting that some of YOU will join me in what I will now call: “LOVE-HUGS VALENTINE’S DAY BAGS FOR THE HOMELESS.” You can do it from whatever part of the COUNTRY OR WORLD THAT YOU ARE IN. Marsha R. Bonner and “CHRISTMAS AT NAN 2015”: The JOY is in the GIVING and that is EXACTLY the SPIRIT that filled The National Action Network on Christmas Day. Hosted by the Reverend Al Sharpton and the NAN Family of Members, Supporters and Volunteers, the festivities were highlighted by Mayor Bill De Blasio and his daughter, Chiara –serving food and presenting gifts to the children. The day was full of FUN, HUGS and LOVE!! It was an HONOR for me to SERVE as a VOLUNTEER and GIVE as MANY HUGS as I could!! I ENCOURAGE YOU to continue to SUPPORT those less fortunate than YOURSELF. Marsha R. Bonner and The Children of Harlem Foundation’s Auction at Cheri Restaurant. I attended the Children of Harlem Foundation’s Auction hosted by Al Eoche, Kheava Hines and Frank DiBrino the Founding Members of this wonderful organization. The unique auction featured works from the kids from a Harlem Public School. The kids created drawings of either a superhero or a cartoon character that would ultimately be auctioned off throughout the evening. Proceeds from each sale went to purchase the character the child drew as a Christmas gift.

Marsha R. Bonner and Denny Moe’s Superstar Barbershops 9th Annual Christmas Toy Drive, in partnership with Denny Moe, Carl Banks, Kenneth Todd Nelson and SQUIRE. It was an incredible day with the Kids from Harlem Dowling-West Side Center For Children And Family Services, Sponsors, Volunteers and Organizers on Saturday, December 19 at Denny Moe’s Barbershop for the Toy Drive.

2015 World AIDS Day commemorated with a screening of the documentary “You Are Not Aline” followed by a panel discussion on HIV and Mental Health of LGBTQ People of Color featuring Eric L. Adams, Jeffrey Gardere, Ph.D and Marsha R. Bonner. Light refreshments will be served before and after the event.

The evening of discussion with Young and Senior Gays and Lesbians reflecting on issues directly affecting the LGBTQ community.  LOVE is and will always be the answer to whatever “affects” and “infects” Our Society. “Celebrating Women’s History Month” – I CELEBRATE LIFE and a key part of doing this includes CELEBRATING the months that give us an opportunity to focus on acknowledging specific individuals, causes, events and activities – around the WORLD. This month we CELEBRATE WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH. I had the opportunity to attend an event at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York honoring Vy Higginsen, the First African American Female Radio Personality; Melissa Mark-Viverito, Speaker of the NYC Council and the First Puerto Rican and Latino to hold a citywide government leadership position; Edith Windsor, the Matriarch of American’s Gay Rights Movement; and Gail Bruce a Native American Education Activist. I also had the distinct opportunity of spending some time with Donna Williams, the MET’s Chief Audience Development Officer. 

The Black Family Share- A-Day was a day of Black Pride and Empowerment! The day was fulled with workshops and variety of Keynote Presenters including: HUGS Movement Life Camp, Brotherhood Foundation, Kings of Kings Foundation, Youth Presentations and O.G & YG Summit, plus a variety of workshops to empower and enforce building healthy black families.

Skype conversation with Marsha R. Bonner, one of the most famous featured individuals on What Would You Do? The discussion with the youth will cover acceptance, tolerance and how to be kind to others.

National Action Network’s Christmas Day Dinner and Toy Giveaway featured families of Sean Bell and Eric Garner who suffered the loss of their loved ones. A big thank you to Reverend Al Sharpton, Dominique Sharpton, Madame Ash Lee (Ashley), Suga Baby Perry (Patrice), Stephanie Mims along with Kenneth Todd Nelson and Rege Lewis of the KT Foundation,  spiritual sister, Kathy Jordan Sharpton and the NAN Members for bringing this special event to life.

A symposium designed to empower teenage girls and young ladies ages 12 to 24 years old.  The incredible woman who gave of their time and shared their stories on the panel with Marsha R. Bonner were Tamika Mallory, Diamond Malone, Dr. Elisa English, Timekia Kennard and Frick N Frack.

The 7th Annual Back to School Drive hosted this year with Fatherhood.gov and special guest Judge Greg Mathis emphasizing the importance of active father’s in our children’s education. We offered FREE haircuts for kids from 11am-2pm!
